Curriculum Rationale – GCSE Business (Edexcel)

The Business curriculum at The Kings Leadership Academy Liverpool is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of the modern business world and the skills required to succeed as future entrepreneurs, employees, and leaders. Our intent is to inspire analytical, enterprising, and resilient learners who can think critically, make informed decisions, and understand the importance of business and enterprise in shaping society and the economy.

Through the study of Edexcel GCSE Business, students explore how businesses start, grow, and operate in dynamic and competitive environments. They learn how external factors such as economic change, technology, and ethics influence business decisions, and they apply this understanding to real-world contexts. The course develops their ability to interpret data, construct logical arguments, and evaluate the impact of strategic choices made by businesses.

At Key Stage 4, students examine topics such as enterprise and entrepreneurship, marketing, human resources, finance, and operations. They develop key transferable skills including problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and numeracy — all essential for further study and future careers in business, management, economics, and beyond. Lessons are designed to be engaging and relevant, encouraging students to think like businesspeople, evaluate evidence, and justify their ideas using real examples.

The department’s intent is to:

  • Aspire for excellence by encouraging curiosity about how businesses operate and inspiring students to innovate and lead.

  • Promote Self-awareness by helping students recognise their own potential, strengths, and interests in business and enterprise.

  • Foster Professionalism by developing strong communication skills, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.

  • Model Integrity by emphasising ethical decision-making, corporate responsibility, and respect for diversity in the workplace.

  • Build Respect for different business practices, cultures, and global perspectives.

  • Encourage Endeavour by challenging students to analyse complex case studies, think strategically, and persevere through evaluative tasks.

Ultimately, our Business curriculum prepares students to understand and contribute to the world around them with confidence and integrity. By combining theory with practical application, it empowers students to become independent thinkers and informed citizens — ready to take their place in the ever-changing global economy.
