The Key Stage 3 Computing curriculum at The Kings Leadership Academy Liverpool is designed to build the digital knowledge, skills, and understanding that underpin success in Computer Science and beyond. Our intent is to provide every student with the confidence, curiosity, and capability to engage safely, creatively, and effectively with technology — preparing them for life, learning, and work in a digital world.
From Year 7 to Year 9, students explore the three core strands of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy. They develop a secure understanding of how computers work, how data is represented and transmitted, and how software is used to solve problems and create solutions. Practical programming is embedded throughout, enabling students to apply computational thinking, design algorithms, and write code using high-level programming languages such as Python.
In addition to coding, students learn how to use a range of digital tools to present information effectively, analyse data, and work collaboratively. They are also taught to be discerning, responsible users of technology, understanding the importance of online safety, data privacy, and digital ethics. These skills provide the foundation for further study in OCR GCSE Computer Science (J277) and prepare students for the demands of modern life and employment.
The department’s intent is to:
Aspire for excellence by encouraging students to explore and apply technology creatively and with confidence.
Promote Self-awareness by developing independence, resilience, and problem-solving skills through practical tasks.
Foster Professionalism through accurate presentation of work, effective use of digital tools, and pride in achievement.
Model Integrity by teaching safe, ethical, and responsible behaviour online and in digital environments.
Build Respect for others, for intellectual property, and for the diverse ways technology impacts global communities.
Encourage Endeavour by challenging students to think logically, persevere through coding challenges, and celebrate progress.
Our Key Stage 3 Computing curriculum nurtures curiosity and technical confidence while laying the foundations for advanced study at GCSE level. By combining theory, creativity, and practical application, students become digitally literate, independent learners — ready to lead, innovate, and adapt in a rapidly evolving technological world.
